‘La Casa’ of luxury timepieces
Cuervo y Sobrinos
La Habana was, at the end of the 19th century, called the ‘Pearl of the Caribbean’ – synonymous of refinement, elegance, glamour, luxury, quality time and Latino life style
A luxury brand of international repute, Cuervo y Sobrinos has been producing its own watch collections in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland since 1882, for a remarkable 135 years. In less than fifty years their combination of high quality creations and the Latin spirit of the brand won over the Americas. The company’s business slumped after political uprisings in the country and in 2002 Marzio Villa bought all rights to the brand and decided to re-launch it after its forty years of dormancy. Since the international re-launch, the brand’s success is growing on a worldwide scale. So, in 2009 they opened a boutique-museum in the heart of old Havana, restoring the brand to its former prestige, right in its native city. With great pride, Cuervo y Sobrinos showed the entire world its will to stay firmly rooted in its traditions.
The brand is present in more than 20 countries, sold through more than 150 official retailers worldwide and is involved in many award ceremonies and events with their brand ambassador, Latino actor, Antonio Banderas. The tradition continues in their contemporary timepieces, which stay true to the ‘vintage’ aesthetic of the original collections and designs created in the past. It pairs simplicity, avant-gardism and art deco with an innovative spirit, expertise and modern Swiss watchmaking. Faithful to the Latino soul and Swiss manufacturing that inspires all of its creations, Cuervo y Sobrinos celebrates the occasion of the 135th anniversary of its creation. To mark this prestigious accomplishment with an iconic piece in the collection, the model Historiador Tradición is a tribute to the key figure responsible for the restoration of Old Havana and its historical centre. The detailing of the timepiece from the 1950s has been expertly recreated. The bubble-shaped, vintage glass, the trapezoidal and circular markers have been combined in a classic design, typical of that time, a masterpiece from a bygone era has been realised.
In addition to this, a metal coin decal is engraved with the date of the 135th anniversary, 1882-2017, at the centre of the see-through back, making this model truly unique. An essential element is the well-known ‘Humidor’, an elegant lacquered cedar box that Cuervo y Sobrinos uses to present its jewels, as tribute to the gentleman cigar smoker. As a partner of Cigar Smoking World Championship, Cuervo y Sobrinos is well known as the official timekeeper of the traditional Split festival, organised by the Mareva Cigar Club. This year exclusively, on the occasion of Anniversary, the winning prizes at the CSWC 2017 in September will be two timepieces of Cuervo y Sobrinos 135th Anniversary’s collection. First Man will receive the Historiador 135th Anniversary combined with an elegant Cuervo y Sobrinos’ writing instrument, in a special Humidor box created to accommodate both. The best Woman will receive the Prominente 135th Anniversary combined with an elegant Cuervo y Sobrinos’ writing instrument, also in a special Humidor box. The essence and philosophy of this exceptional Swiss brand is a respect of Cuban origin and tradition, combined with state-of-the art watchmaking competence and Swiss made know-how.
