Pirelli 42 Review: Definitive Luxury RIB
In the highly competitive 12 to 14 meter luxury RIB segment, few models have achieved iconic status as rapidly as the Pirelli 42.
Developed in collaboration between TecnoRib and Sweden’s Mannerfelt Design Team, this maxi RIB seamlessly blends racing hydrodynamics with the kind of luxury typically reserved for much larger yachts. The result is a highly versatile vessel that performs equally well as a superyacht tender or a standalone day cruiser for demanding owners.
Bold and sporty silhouette
Even at the dock, the Pirelli 42 looks like it is in motion. Low, wide, and self assured, its sleek lines, reminiscent of a sporty coupé, give the impression of a boat drawn with a single, fluid stroke of the designer's pen. The tubes feature the distinctive Pirelli tire tread pattern, while the wide windshield flows seamlessly into the hard top, creating a continuous, aerodynamic profile.
The deck layout is clean, open, and highly functional. Broad, secure walkarounds with high bulwarks and well placed handrails ensure safe movement onboard, even at full speed. The bow is dedicated to a generous sunpad, while the stern is designed as a multifunctional lounge for socializing, dining, or simply taking in the views. Centrally located, a well equipped wet bar features a large refrigerator, a grill, and an icemaker.
The aft sunpad is spacious enough to make you completely lose track of time. The cockpit, complete with a large dining table, feels like an open air living room facing the sea, while the cabin below is minimalist, quiet, and surprisingly spacious.
Cabin with character and a skipper focused helm
The interior space offers a perfect retreat for short rests or weekend overnight stays. The materials are premium, the joinery is precise, and the choice of colors and lighting is subtly nuanced. Our test model featured a separate head with a sink and shower, which significantly enhances the boat's practical layout. Every detail and touchpoint leaves the impression of well thought out design, where aesthetics and functionality are in perfect harmony.
The helm station has been designed with meticulous attention to detail, as the Pirelli 42 is a boat that truly shines when underway. Visibility is almost panoramic, ergonomics are flawless, and the instruments are positioned so intuitively that you never have to search for a switch. Everything is geared toward delivering a sense of confidence and precision, it is a helm that practically begs you to take the wheel.
Performance on the water
Our test boat was powered by twin Mercury 400 JPO V10 outboards with joystick piloting. It is a configuration that promises a lot on paper and delivers even more on the water.
At low speeds, the Pirelli 42 glides quietly and elegantly. The V10s have a velvety, refined sound, and the boat responds instantly to every command. Pushing the throttles forward, we reached 25 knots in just 12 seconds, while hitting 35 knots took 22 seconds. The top speed with this engine setup was 49 knots. It is worth noting that during our trial, both the fuel and water tanks were nearly full, with four adults onboard, on completely flat seas.
Underway at any speed, the hull designed by the Mannerfelt Design Team demonstrates its sheer genius. In every turn, the boat leans in just the right amount, no sliding, no spraying, and absolutely no surprises. Chops and waves are not obstacles or reasons to throttle back, instead, they simply become the rhythm of the ride. Deceleration is instantaneous when pulling back the throttles, and the following wake never washes over the aft swim platform.
Ultimately, the Pirelli 42 is an exceptional model, tailored for those who appreciate that true luxury is about performance and experience. It is a brilliant, versatile package that plays the roles of superyacht tender and premium day cruiser with equal, effortless ease.
