Prvić island, nestled within the Šibenik archipelago, isn’t your typical Adriatic destination. This island paradise, embraced by the charming settlements of Šepurine and Luka, feels like a world apart. It seems to float on its very own tranquil sea, suspended in time

Whispers of History: Unveiling Prvić Island’s Rich Past
The island history stretches back centuries, with mentions in various documents as early as the 11th century. Like on many other Adriatic islands, larger settlements emerged on Prvić island after Ottoman invasions.
However, the island truly flourished during the Renaissance. It was during that time that Faust Vrančić, the most famous son of Prvić, spent his formative years on the island. Vrančić, a remarkable figure who excelled in everything he tried, including being an inventor, writer, bishop, spent summers on the island, in his family summer home.
It’s quite possible that the serene shores of Prvić island served as his muse, and there he dreamt up his innovative creations, with the parachute being perhaps his most famous among them. Interestingly, despite the prominence he achieved during his lifetime, Vrančić chose the modest Church of Our Lady of Mercy in Prvić Luka as his final resting place.
In the shadow of its more visited neighbors, Prvić island enjoys a curious invisibility. Despite its proximity to popular marinas like ACI Marina Vodice, Marina Mandalina and Marina Frapa in Rogoznica – all bustling hubs for visits to the beloved Kornati archipelago – Prvić itself remains curiously absent from many a sailor’s itinerary, often relegated to a quick stop or bypassed altogether in favor of more distant destinations.
Hidden Treasures: Discovering the Enchanting Coast of Prvić Island
However, seasoned travelers like us, who have spent countless summers and even a few winters soaking up the charm of Prvić island and its residents, warrant a detour. This island, so close to the mainland it feels almost within arm’s reach, offers an authenticity often missing from the well-worn tourist routes. Forgo the familiar and cast our anchor on the shores of Prvić island. There’s a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
At first glance, being so close to the mainland might not seem like an advantage. But for the permanent residents of Prvić island, going to Vodice, as they say there, is a necessity, not a leisure activity. Perhaps it’s the way Šepurine and Luka villages seem to turn their backs towards the mainland, or maybe it’s the magic woven into the labyrinthine stone streets. It could even be the absence of cars on the island’s single, one-kilometer road. Whatever the reason, Prvić island offers a unique escape.
Summer paints a vibrant picture on Prvić island. Houses and villas brim with activity, their inhabitants a delightful mix of tourists and local families who return seasonally. The air fills with the joyous sound of children’s laughter as they frolic on the beaches. A sense of languid ease takes over as visitors, both new and familiar, stroll from the cool shade of their abodes to the inviting embrace of the sea and back again. As the day wanes, a gentle murmur rises from the houses, spilling out onto the streets and intertwining with the balmy night air.
A World Away: Experiencing Prvić Island’s Unique Charm
These warm summer nights on Prvić island hold a special place in history. The now-closed tavern/museum and studio Mirina, once a vibrant gathering spot run by Goran and Martina Franić, played host to a legendary musical creation. Here, in both the welcoming interior and the open-air atmosphere of Šepurine, world-renowned guitarist Miroslav Tadić crafted an album that echoed the very soul of the island.
Tadić, who sought solace in his Prvić island summer home as a respite from the fast pace of life in Los Angeles, wasn’t just inspired by the island’s beauty – he was deeply touched by its people. The resulting album, aptly named Mirina, wasn’t simply a display case for his musical ideas: it was a heartfelt dedication to the island and its inhabitants.
Dalmatian songs, infused with Tadić’s improvisational brilliance, were woven into the very fabric of the recording. These melodies weren’t just meant to entertain – they were a gift, a way to ease the long winter months for his island friends and provide a soothing, unobtrusive backdrop to countless Prvić island nights.
The tradition of lively gatherings continues at tavern Bare, a haven right on the waterfront of Prvić island. For years, Ivo and Zrinka Škara have successfully run this establishment, making it a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. Here, you can indulge in a delicious brunch, and be sure to try the local favorite – tuna in a savory sauce. This delectable dish is just one of the many reasons the menu at Bare is so enticing.
Šepurine’s Allure: A Timeless Fishing Village
As spring unfolds and the first rays of sunshine bathe Prvić island in warmth, the terrace at Bare becomes a coveted spot. This prime location offers a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. From your vantage point, you can take in the captivating panorama that surrounds you. The port, displaying several beautiful wooden gajeta boats, adds a touch of nautical charm.
Gazing farther out, your eyes will meet the iconic bell tower of St. Roko, symbol of Šepurine. And finally, as the day draws to a close, the distant Kornati archipelago transforms into a masterpiece painted in the vibrant hues of sunset.
Limited mooring options in Šepurine
While mooring options in Šepurine are limited, you don’t have to miss out on experiencing this charming village. Sailboats can moor temporarily at the very entrance to the port, with a depth of only two meters.
This allows you to take a quick break to replenish supplies in the store or enjoy a cup of coffee at the Šepurine bar. However, spending the night here is tricky unless you have a local connection on the island.
Prvić Luka’s Heartbeat: The Island’s Main Port
You can drop your anchor in the entire bay near Šepurine, but this is only recommended in good weather conditions. For a truly peaceful night’s sleep on Prvić island, set sail for Prvić Luka. Here, you’ll find a well-equipped marina with all the necessary nautical infrastructure to ensure a comfortable and secure stay.
A Cultural Feast: Exploring the Faust Vrančić Museum
No visit to Prvić Luka is complete without exploring the fascinating Faust Vrančić Museum. This unique museum showcases miniature replicas of Vrančić’s ingenious inventions, offering a glimpse into the mind of this visionary polymath. Multimedia displays further enrich the experience, bringing the story of the ‘Croatian Da Vinci’ to life and highlighting the remarkable legacy of this brilliant inventor.
Leaving the Faust Vrančić Museum, your taste buds will undoubtedly be tempted by the enticing aromas wafting from the waterfront restaurants lining Prvić Luka. Here, you’ll find a delightful array of options to tantalize your palate.
Waterfront Delights: Dining with a View
For those seeking a classic Mediterranean experience, Mareta or Stare Makine offer delicious fare. If you’re looking for something a little different, Maslina tavern, perched right by the sea, promises a unique and memorable dining experience. No matter your preference, each restaurant provides a welcome respite from the confines of your ship’s galley.
But before you indulge in a restaurant meal, be sure to explore the exceptional market nestled beside the harbor. This haven of local produce is a treasure trove for any foodie. Here, you might just snag an incredible deal, like we did during our late summer visit. Without any haggling or hassle, we managed to fill a bag with fresh fish, all for a surprisingly affordable price.
