Lagoon 60 Review: The 60-Foot Epitome of French Joie de Vivre
The new generation French catamaran combines elegance and spaciousness, offering flexible cabins, a luxurious flybridge, and innovative living areas
Thew new Lagoon 60 debuted in Cannes last year, and we saw the first units sailing the waters of Croatia this summer.
Their dealer for Croatia, Nautika Centar Nava proudly point this is the first model of the completely new generation of French cats, born again in collaboration between the design studio VPLP signing exterior lines, and Nauta Design, designer of the interior.
This 18.27 meter long catamaran sits perfectly between Lagoon 55 and the slightly older model Sixty5, offering the ideal balance between spaciousness, handling and sophisticated style.
The mast has been moved back toward the bow, and stern terraces form an extension of the already large cockpit – and make the model easily recognizable. The cockpit thus gains almost 40 square meters of surface, and the terraces are easy to use, managed by a single button, with help of an electric motor.
From the stern platforms, 45-degree angle stairs are added to climb towards the rimless cockpit. Port-side aft, there is a small gas grill, and starboard a gangway skillfully hidden from view. In the middle, the large lifting platform accommodates the tender and all the sea toys owners expect these days.
Left in the cockpit, there is one large table composed of two smaller tables that cleverly fold out to seat ten, and on the right there are the stairs to the upper deck, with a nice day bed and a small bar with a refrigerator underneath. The cockpit floor hides additional storage for safety equipment and some marine ‘toys’.
You’ll understand the designers’ intentions as soon as you step inside: the salon is fluid, surrounded by large glazed surfaces and brimming with open spaces that blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living.
The bow terrace can be directly accessed from the salon through a watertight door, and the salon enjoys additional portion of fresh air thanks to the electric system for lowering the large front window.
It is worth mentioning that this model is available with a galley on the lower deck, in which case the left corner of the salon is occupied by a decent bar, or with a galley upstairs, which is then full-size and fully equipped. On the left side there is a large L-shaped sofa, and on the right, a large dining table.
Up on the bow there is a well protected area with seating and sun pads, as well as many smaller storage spaces, while nets help the crew to tackle the anchor and mooring.
As for sail, the model can be equipped with as usual three bow sails – a small jib, a genoa and a Code 0, all three optionally furled with the help of an electric motor. The descent to the lower deck copies the solution of the super-successful 65-foot model.
Starboard, there is the large master cabin divided into three spaces, with a large bed from which a view extends through a large side windows, a middle section with storages and the aft with a bathroom, served by a dedicated door leading outside, and with a separate shower and toilet. The entire bathroom area can be closed off with a sliding door hidden inside the bulkhead.
The cabin layout is flexible – the new Lagoon 60 is available with four, five or six cabins, all with private bathrooms, ideal for private owners or charter fleets.
Forward on the lower deck, on both sides there are VIP cabins with large double beds and separate bathrooms. The port hull can host one or two convertible cabins, depending on the placement of the galley. The toilet area here also serves as day head, for easy access during the day.
Another such nice detail is the small crew mess, or just a crew dining corner if the galley is placed in the port hull. In the bow, there are crew cabins and optional storage for sails in the starboard hull.
Fly bridge is simply amazing: huge, spacious and comfortable, with space for sunbathing, socializing, even barbecuing. If you like the idea of watching the sun set every single day, this is your spot aboard.
On the bow, there is enough space for large sun pads, seating and a teak table, as well as a fully equipped bar. The helm station served by a double seat enjoys excellent visibility, with winches near by and Yanmar Joystick (option) for easier maneuvering in the port.
Lagoon 60 can be equipped with solar panels placed on the hard-top, water desalination systems, high-capacity batteries and a hybrid propulsion system (option). Materials include FSC-certified wood and recycled fabrics, underscoring the commitment of the builder to nature preservation.
The new model is powered by two 150 or 180-hp engines, with highly efficient sails and an optimized deck for easy sailing with minimal crew.
The Lagoon 60 offers smooth, stable and comfortable sailing, and will be equally interesting to lovers of ocean cruising or to those who just want to take a little joyride in charter. All in all, a worthy and valuable new member of the Lagoon family.
