FIM 440 Regina Review: Regina Reigns Supreme

5 minutes

This cute little Italian prioritizes outdoor living, and her innovative interior layout and the use of premium materials make her an ideal choice for both day trips or longer cruises

At the Cannes Boat Show 2023, FIM debuted their new pride and joy, the 44-foot FIM 440 Regina, which in many ways exceeded expectations. A newly designed roof, interesting solutions such for social spaces in the bow, additional sunbathing space in the cockpit and a carefully designed interior living space complemented the solutions already seen on FIM‘s larger model 470 Regina.

The FIM 440 Regina features spacious outdoor areas, including an aft deck with additional terraces and a large Mediterranean-style sunbed.

The exterior design takes cues from some well-known nautical names, while the irregular shapes of glazed surfaces soften the mighty and tall lines of hull to an extent. The roof is placed on elegant pillars on the hull of the vessel, and the design is automotive in inspiration, meaning, of course, an abundance of details in stainless steel.

The interiors are very attractive, due to the innovative layout and high quality materials and fabrics

With her 13,6 meters of length and four meters of width, the 440 Regina puts outdoor living space at the forefront of design and concept. The exteriors are spacious, starting from the aft platform with folding terraces in the cockpit area. Aft, there is a large sofa fit for any Mediterranean terrace, with plenty of storage space underneath. The cockpit can be accessed from the aft platform on both sides, via side passages, which greatly facilitates movement when docking.

The bow is three stairs up, and designed as another large sunbathing area, with a round serving table which can be removed when not in use. This area is well protected from the sun by a soft top supported by four posts. In the cockpit there is room for two benches and one large. Both benches are foldable and can transform into a bed.

Behind the skipper’s seat, there is the galley, with a dishwasher, grill or stove, refrigerator and two cupboards. On the unit we tested, the refrigerator and the cabinet doors were covered with teak, which gave an elegant, sophisticated impression.

The instrument panel is large enough, with plenty of space for additional equipment. All switches are within reach, all on the left side, while on the right side, there are the throttle lever and the Volvo Penta drive joystick.

The windshield is single-pane, and the supporting side pillars far enough apart that they do not interfere with visibility during navigation. The hard top is thoughtfully designed, installed into the outer shell of the hull as to not interfere with movement in the cockpit.

The new FIM 440 Regina was designed for couples or families, and is equally interesting for day trips and longer cruises, carrying a limited number of guests. The innovative interior layout, the use of top quality materials and sophisticated finishing touches make the interior very attractive.

The softly rounded lacquered walls, the solid wood finishing edges and the use of modern materials and colors create a pleasant and exclusive atmosphere inspired by luxury motor yachts. The standard configuration includes two living areas, one master cabin in the center of the hull, and an area in the bow with a dining table and a V-shaped sofa, which can be converted into an additional berth. Natural light seeps through hull windows and the skylight, as does fresh marine air.

The central space holds a kitchen counter with a glass-ceramic hob and sink, as well as cabinets under the counter, and hanging cabinets above the window. Opposite the galley, there is a large storage space with a free-standing refrigerator with freezer, and a microwave oven.

The full-width master cabin is located in the widest part of the hull, with the bed placed transversely to the central axis of the vessel, placing the headboard port-side. The four-meter-wide cabin has enough space for a corner with a relaxing sofa, and is furnished in high-quality furniture and fabrics – we especially liked the ribbed walls made in an artificial material and natural leather.

The choice of accessories and materials follows perfectly the builder’s ‘Made in Italy’ philosophy, as the yacht was designed in cooperation with top Italian brands, and with a special emphasis on sustainability. The interiors can be customized to a certain extent to the owner’s lifestyle and cruising philosophy.

We tested the new FIM 440 Regina on Lake Garda, outside the town of Sirmione. The weather was ideal, with an air temperature of around 26 degrees and no wind. The lake was calm, and after warming up the engines and a few rounds around the lake, we went full throttle.

The two mighty Volvo Penta D6 engines (2 x 440 hp) propelled 440 Regina to a speed of 38 knots, with the consumption of 180 l/h. At that speed, the autonomy is around 220 nm (not counting the ten percent fuel reserve). At 3000 rpm, the speed was 24,5 knots and the consumption fell down to 115 l/h, quite a comfortable cruising speed.

We did not get the opportunity to see how 440 Regina handles waves, but we did execute some sharp turns and pitches, and found her handling similar to that of sports vessels, with a slightly larger stern exit angle than usual. The builder offers a long list of accessories and a choice of materials, as well as a basic version powered by a pair of Volvo Penta D6 (2 x 380 hp), or two Yanmar Diesel engines (2 x 370 hp).
