Gordan Devivi and Duje Ferić of OTP Leasing discuss current trends in nautical leasing, shifting market dynamics, and the vital role of a personalized approach when working with clients

OTP Leasing has been building its position as one of the leading financial partners of the Croatian nautical sector for almost two decades. Their approach is based on understanding the specifics of the nautical market, flexible financing models and long-term client relationships. We spoke to Gordan Devivi and Duje Ferić from OTP Leasing about current trends in nautical leasing, changes in the market and the importance of a personal approach.

OTP LEASING IS ONE OF THE LEADERS IN NAUTICAL LEASING. WHAT IS THE KEY TO THIS SUCCESS?
Duje: The key to our success lies in the long-term trust and presence that we've built with partners and clients over almost 20 years. At OTP Leasing, we don't just look at the numbers, but we try to understand the specifics of the nautical business and the lifestyle that yachts imply. Our experience and flexibility allow us to offer solutions that match the real needs of the market, so clients recognize us as a reliable partner.

HOW HAS THE DEMAND FOR VESSEL FINANCING CHANGED IN RECENT YEARS?
Gordan: In the last four years, demand grew strong, but in 2025 we have noticed a slowdown. The Croatian market has seen a significant increase in the supply of vessels in a short period of time, so such stabilization is expected. There is still interest, but our clients are now more focused on higher-quality and more sustainable investments.

YOUR OFFER INCLUDES SEASONAL LEASING.  HOW DOES THIS MODEL FIT INTO THE NAUTICAL SECTOR?
Duje: The possibility of repaying financial leasing through so-called seasonal installments has proven to be an extremely successful model, as it is perfectly aligned with the rhythm of the nautical season. Clients who generate income during the summer can adjust their financial obligations to their cash flow, which makes planning and conducting business easier for them. This is an example of how understanding the specifics of the industry leads to solutions that are actually practical.

HOW DOES PERSONAL EXPERIENCE IN NAUTICAL ACTIVITIES HELP WITH CLIENTS?
Gordan: First-hand experience always makes a difference. When you share the same passion with your clients, communication is more natural and solution-oriented. We understand their needs and desires, but also the challenges they face, be they related to vessel maintenance, crew or season planning. That kind of approach builds long-term trust and allows us to develop optimal financial solutions together.

HOW DO YACHT SHOWS CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR BUSINESS AND PARTNERSHIPS?
Duje: Trade shows are very valuable to us, as in just a few days they bring together the entire nautical system, so to speak; from shipbuilders and dealers to vessel buyers and financial partners. Other than giving us the opportunity to present new financing models, they are also a key opportunity to strengthen client relationships and partnership ties. It is through these meetings that collaborations are often born that eventually result in long-term projects.

CAN YOU SHARE A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE OF A NON-STANDARD SOLUTION YOU HAVE DEVELOPED FOR A CLIENT?
Gordan: One of my favorite examples of collaboration was with a client who had just founded a company in the segment of tourist excursions and passenger transport to our islands. At first, it was challenging to secure financing, but individual approach and joint project development lead us to a solution that suited everyone. Today, this client is operating very successfully and is a great example of how support and partnership can open doors to new business opportunities.

HOW DO YOU SEE THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE NAUTICAL LEASING MARKET?
Duje: Expectations in nautical leasing are moving towards sustainable financing. We’ve noticed a slowdown in the market. There is increasing interest in financing for vessels with a smaller ecological footprint, both hybrid and electric powered, but also for more sustainable business models in charter. OTP Leasing will continue to monitor those trends and provide support to clients focused on long-term results and responsible management.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATION OR SAILING RACE?
Gordan: It’s difficult to choose just one. Our Adriatic has too many beautiful places, but Hvar and Vis are special for their authenticity and energy. My colleague here, Duje Ferić, has participated in several races this year and was in the Mareus 3 crew that won second place at Mrduja 2025. This is a true demonstration of how close all of us at OTP Leasing are to the sea ourselves.
