Sanlorenzo SX120 Review: Statement in Modern Yacht Design
Step aboard the 37-meter Sanlorenzo crossover yacht, where Zuccon and Lissoni have perfectly balanced sophisticated design with pioneering efficiency
We really like Sanlorenzo SX range as an epitome of sophisticated design and smart technological solutions, so when the new model arrived at the market, we were extremely happy to be able to see her in detail.
Flagship of crossover line
On a sunny day in Cannes, we sailed with a new yacht trying to discover her soul during the navigation, also knowing that we are sailing on the largest-ever yacht in the crossover range. We were lucky enough to have technicians from Volvo Penta on board, explaining why this yacht is so special in technical aspect, starting with four IPS 1000 hp engines.
Performance and pioneering technology
In fact, for the first time ever, this unit was equipped with Volvo Penta's IPS Professional Platform, designed for the modular integration of both traditional and alternative energy sources.
A distinctive feature of the platform is the Eco Mode function, which is a new smart feature that automatically adjusts engine power based on real-time demand to optimize fuel consumption, reduce emissions and mechanical wear.
The propulsion is also equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust gas treatment service. Both Eco Mode and the SCR represent a concrete solution balancing performance and environmental responsibility.
What it means is that you don’t need to use all four engines all the time during navigation, our Captain who delivered the yacht from La Spezia told us that you can use just two engines once you arrive at target speed. When you push the boat to the desired speed, then activate four engines.
Onboard handling and cruising data
Of course, four engines enable perfect manouvering in the harbour, pushing her sideways like a toy, so on this yacht you can really use the best of tecnology despite her 37 meters of length and huge displacement of 270 tons. On this yacht, the new features are Assisted Docking and Integral Docking.
On the water, 23.3 knots was the maximum speed we reached, and the cruising was from 17 to 18 knots. When running only with two engines her consumption drops to 20 to 22 litres per mile. This is for sure not a performance oriented yacht, but with a smart use of the engines she can definitely be a rational one.
More importantly, she moves through the water with ease and soft movements, staying stable due to her electric stabilization.
Exterior design and outdoor living
In the other hand her exterior appereance is nothing less than spectacular, at the first sight offering vies at 40 sqm beach area with retractable pool and opening sides located at the stern.
Collaboration with Zuccon and Lissoni
In general, new SX family member offers bold reimagining of life at sea through seamless integration of indoor-outdoor living, adaptability. Once again, the perfect conceptual and formal balance between the boat's exteriors and interiors stems from the collaboration with Zuccon International Project and Piero Lissoni, who enhance with their usual elegance and mastery all the potential of this luxury yacht with its essential and sophisticated design.
‘The Sanlorenzo SX120 is a project that is a manifesto of the evolutionary path that the SX range has taken in recent years. A journey has unequivocally demonstrated the concept's ability to decline in different dimensions’ said Bernardo Zuccon.
The 70sqm beach area and pop-up pool
Articulated on four decks, the SX120 is characterized by a total rethinking of space. One of the boat's distinctive elements is the mentioned 40sqm beach area that, thanks to opening side terraces, can extend up to 70sqm.
The same beach area also houses a pop-up pool, which can be covered or uncovered through a lift and slide sundeck mechanism to ensure optimal sailing conditions. A few steps connect the beach area with a large, cozy and bright lounge, an ideal continuation of the outdoor space.
Interior design and guest comfort
The Lower Deck also houses four guest cabins, one of which can be kept open as a lounge or closed to convert it into a cabin, a small hammam and the crew area. Moving up to the Main Deck, guests' attention is drawn to a vast saloon, enveloped in natural light thanks to the large windows, where a magnificent sculptural wooden staircase, clad externally in steel, bears the unmistakable signature of Piero Lissoni.
Exploring the main deck and owner's suite
The Main Deck also houses, aft, a dining area open on three sides, which can accommodate up to 14 guests and from which the salon is accessed through the transparencies of a large window.
The forward part of this deck houses bright master bedroom with a sea view and front oriented bed, which enjoys direct access to a space in the bow, an area that can be equipped as a sundeck or a patio, with a coffee table and an outdoor lounge.
Innovative flybridge sun deck
The elegant staircase ascends to the Upper Deck, which features a cozy lounge overlooking the sea. This lounge is connected via an external staircase to one of the SX120's most original innovations: the Flybridge.
For the first time on this type of yacht, the Flybridge is transformed into an elegant Sun Deck. It boasts a modular seating system that can be freely configured and equipped with additional features, while carbon poles support sunshades covering the exterior areas.
Sophisticated interior finishes
In its interior design, SX120 reflects sophisticated materials throughout the vessel, the ceilings are punctuated by refined wooden quills, a series of dense cusps that continue vertically along the walls, creating an architectural effect of continuity and depth.
Some vertical inserts, on the other hand, have been treated with a steel-effect film, giving the rooms a contemporary feel. The floors elegantly alternate between parquet and carpet, while in the bathrooms a marble-effect ceramic material was chosen.
Not to be forgotten, happy crew makes a happy boat so four cabins for six crew members were designed, ensuring that lucky owner of this yacht remains happy during his life on board.
