Nimbus 305 Coupe Review: Smart Choices for Family Cruising

4 minutes

The latest model of Swedish builder Nimbus is a large cruiser masquerading as a small family boat, full of smart solutions and lovely surprises all working together to guarantee maximum comfort

At the invitation of the Croatian dealer for Nimbus, Nautika Centar Nava, we had the opportunity to test the new Nimbus 305 Coupe in the waters around Split. Delightfully serious at first, and obviously inspired by proper work boats, but with smooth, stylish finish, the new Nimbus 305 Coupe immediately larger than her overall length of 10 meters.

This magic is powered by her high semi-displacement hull, her not too sharp bow, her massive superstructure with a roof that continues beyond it. The roof serves as protection for the aft in summer months, or as a basis for a winter awning, which allows for the entire aft part to be closed.

After stepping aboard, we found ourselves on a decently sized aft platform, with adjacent stairs to allow access to the water and several practical fender holders. A small door separates the aft platform area from the aft cockpit, dominated by an L-shaped sofa and a folding dining table port-side, for more space.

This Scandinavian dedication to practicality and details is visible everywhere on the model: spacious storage areas in the floor and under the sofas, easily accessible engine hiding under a cover in the floor.

Starboard, there is a pretty wide side passage leading toward the bow, while its port twin is somewhat narrower, since the entire superstructure lies off-center, to the left, but still wide enough for easy use. On the bow, in front of the windshield lies a spacious sunbathing area, while at the very top of the bow there is wide passage through the tall and stylish stainless steel fence.Nimbus 305 Coupe salon

Below, there is a large storage space for the anchor, the chain and the fenders, as well as integrated folding steps for entering the sea from the bow. The superstructure has two entrances, a large aft one with a double door, and the side passage with a sliding door, placed right next to the helm and leading to the starboard side passage.

In the superstructure, on the right side, there is a small galley with a sink and an electric kettle, while two refrigerators are located under the bench and under the command console. The dining table with two accompanying benches seats four, and can be lowered and turned into an extra bed.

The command console position is positioned quite high and provides excellent visibility, and gives the skipper a feel for the boat. The central space on the control panel is occupied by a large Simrad chart plotter, and below it, at helm level, lie the commands and switches for all ship systems.

To the right of the helm, there is a small control screen for monitoring engine data, as well as bow and stern drive data, while the Zipwake control screen control trim via a dedicated touchscreen.

To the left, there is a small bench, and the staircase leading below deck. On the lower deck, there is enough space for the double master cabin in the bow, a double guest cabin, and a small head.

In navigation, Nimbus 305 Coupe boasts the stability of a much larger boat. During our test, the sea was quite trying, but we’ve noticed barely any rolling. Nimbus 305 was excellent and precise in turns, with a good turning radius and minimal loss of speed.

Powered by one Volvo Penta D2 270-HP engine, the model is quite fast and quite frugal, consuming only 10 l/h at about 8.3 knots, and only 38 l/h at top speed of 18 knots. The maximum speed we achieved was 23.5 knots, with 52 l/h, with five people on board.

Thanks to the bow and stern propeller, docking is very easy. In line with modern trends, the model is also available with a 1800-rpm Torqeedo Deep Blue engine.

With smart design and top quality, this small  cruiser is a s good as we’ve come to expect from her builder, and an excellent choice for weekends spent cruising the Adriatic.
