Feadship celebrates its Diamond Jubilee this year, marking not only 75 years of unparalleled craftsmanship but also a maritime legacy spanning an impressive 404 years, thanks to the De Vries, De Voogt, and Van Lent yards
From its humble beginnings in 1949, Feadship has grown to have an astounding 1,700 meters of yachts under construction today. Among its groundbreaking projects is the majestic 118.80-meter Project 821, featuring hydrogen fuel cell propulsion, a testament to Feadship’s commitment to innovation.
The birth of Feadship: Exporting dutch craftsmanship
Feadship made its debut at the New York National Boat Show in 1951, just two years after a group of marine industry leaders gathered to strategize the export of Dutch-built boats. The First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders (Feadship) had a singular mission: to promote luxury craft exports to the United States.
The strategy was simple: each shipyard would contribute a boat designed for export, sharing the marketing costs. This approach proved successful, as crowds gathered at the Feadship stand in New York to admire the sturdy steel hulls, including 8- and 10-meter motor cruisers and a 6.50-meter daysailer. In the following years, orders surged, including custom 23- and 30-meter yachts commissioned by prominent Americans.
Innovation and Design: Setting new standards
At the helm of Feadship’s design was the renowned naval architect Henri de Voogt, with Van der Loo and De Klerk lending their expertise to interiors, setting new standards of quality. Feadship’s commitment to innovation extended to technical areas, including corrosion control, mechanical and electrical systems, and pioneering the use of materials like aluminum, carbon fiber, and glass. This dedication to excellence established Feadship as a beacon of superyacht craftsmanship.
Iconic yachts and a sustainable vision
Luxury reached new heights with iconic Feadships like Sussuro, Ecstasea, and Predator, while yachts such as Savannah and Obsidian demonstrated a commitment to sustainability. These vessels paved the way for Feadship’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.
As Feadship commemorates its 75th anniversary, it not only celebrates its illustrious past but also reaffirms its position as a pioneer in the world of luxury yacht construction, setting sail towards a future defined by innovation and sustainability.
Craftsmanship rooted in tradition
Feadship’s 75 years of innovation are anchored in a rich maritime tradition, and the brand has delivered over five hundred yachts to date. Each Feadship, defined by superb craftsmanship, sets the standard in every aspect of design, engineering, and construction. The builders of the first Feadships shown in the US, Van Lent and De Vries, have become leading figures in the superyacht world.
