Zlatni Rat: The Iconic Beach of Bol
There are places that we get hooked on, that make us addicted to their space, to their specific atmosphere, to their cantons, trees, pits, special rocks on which we like to sit and rest. Bol on Brač is one of those. Regardless of the fact that the pebble beach of Zlatni Rat made it a famous summer resort and tourist mecca, and the wild punta of that beach, moved by sea currents and winds, launched it on the covers of world travel magazines, the soul of Bol is also present in many hidden places, in lesser-known small beaches hidden by tamarisks and agaves, which are especially loved by nudists, then in cafes in unusual places, in pine forests.
But above all, the soul of Bol is in its winds. In the summer, mistrals and tramuntanas, in the winter the south, stormy lebics and bores that descend from Biokovo. Those who have not found themselves in it will say that they avoid it because some devil is always smoking there.
That’s how it is. It is to the winds that Bol owes part of its tourist recognition, because the strong mistral that blows almost every day in the summer makes Bol a favorite destination for surfers, and for fans of kite surfing and paragliding.
Discovering Bol’s Hidden Gems
Geographically, Bol is a place of open space. Scattered along the coast, from the Dominican monastery in the east to Zlatni rat beach in the west. In front of it is the blue of the Hvar Channel, and behind it are the Koštilo hills and the highest peak of all the Adriatic islands, Vidova gora, 778 meters high. Among sailors, it is known as an unsafe port, from which it is best to escape if the weathermen have announced a storm.
Bol is a place with an unusually diverse rhythm, tourist commotion, but also quiet corners, each of which tells its own story. For example, Veli Most, next to which the first morning catamaran from Jelsa docks, is also the place where ships anchor, and the place where during the summer, local swimmers meet during the day waiting for the catamaran from Split, and the place where young people gather in the evening and share their first kisses and first cigarettes.
Once upon a time, before tourism had completely taken over life in Bol, steamers and fishing boats docked at Veli Most. Today, mini cruisers are anchored in the summer.
Just as wind waves wash over Bol in the rhythm of coming and going, and just as the sea rises and falls in tides, so in Bol both summer and winter differ in intensity and way of life. In winter, the locals are focused on their family life, agricultural work, arranging apartments for the summer, children are at school… In the summer, almost everything is subordinated to tourism and the needs and offers of guests.

Immerse Yourself in History: Exploring Bol’s Rich Heritage
Bol is also a specific place of island culture, with three summer months full of cultural events. From the middle of June to the end of September, the manifestation ‘Bol litho’, organized by the Culture Center of the municipality of Bol, brings various programs, classical concerts, exhibition openings, book promotions, entertainment concerts, jazz concerts, theater performances for children and adults, or ‘Bol litja’ every night night’ that brings together all generations with local music and performances by local musicians. In addition, special thematic festivals of graffiti, klapa, art film, and the International Brac Summer Carnival are held.
The town also has a richly arranged municipal library, which has 21,000 books in its collection, including books in as many as eight languages. The Bol library is located in an old summer house, which is an example of late Gothic architecture on the island, through whose stone bifores you can see the port of Bol on one side and the island of Hvar on the other.
Bol is a place of solitude and a place of dynamism, a place of peace and a place where you can never be bored, with all the little hidden wonders of nature and all the opportunities to meet through organized events.
